The questions behind the work

Your mission is clear.
Is your financial picture?

Nonprofit decisions rarely fit neatly into a financial statement. The useful work is connecting the numbers to the choices in front of you.

01

“We have cash.
Can we use it?”

Restricted grants and upcoming obligations can tell a different story from the bank balance. Separate what's held from what's available.

02

“What does the
board need to see?”

Clear reporting connects results, budget differences and cash needs to the decisions your board is being asked to make.

03

“Can our finances
keep up with us?”

Growth, reimbursement timing and grant requirements put pressure on finance capacity. Build a clearer view of the work and resources ahead.

A little clarity goes a long way

Cash in the bank is not always cash available to operate.

Move the sliders to see how restrictions and reserves change the picture. The bank balance stays the same. The decision does not.

$45,000

Unrestricted cash set aside by board policy, separate from restricted cash. No amount is deducted twice.

$300,000 − $135,000 − $45,000 = $120,000 left in this illustration.
Read the static example and calculation

Start with a fictional $300,000 bank balance. Set aside $135,000 in restricted cash and $45,000 in a separate board-designated reserve. This leaves $120,000 in the illustration: $300,000 − $135,000 − $45,000. The restricted cash and reserve do not overlap. The reserve slider is limited to the remaining unrestricted balance.

A simplified teaching illustration, not a liquidity assessment or financial advice. Actual available cash depends on specific restrictions, timing, obligations and organizational policies. A forecast adds the timing of receipts and payments to the picture.
